Norway's seafaring culture was very much in evidence. Aside from the Viking Ship Museum (the main purpose of this side trip) we also visited the ship museum and Thor Heyerdahl's museum containing Kon Tiki, his balsa wood raft, and Ra II, his papyrus boat. Susan and Jerry took their turns on boats this trip - here is Susan on the the ferry which runs from the main part of Oslo out to an island on which are most of the museums.

Boats of various types lined up along the quay, including the ferry which we took over to the "museum island" of Bygdøy.

The sailboats were like something out of a movie, we could never tell of they were in use or just for show, but I suspect that they were all in use except for the older ones at the Maritime Museum.

Several more boats lined up at the docks, with the Oslo skyline in the background.

More sailboats in the harbor - not the crane in the background, Oslo is growing and expanding.

We passed these houses built on the steep shore on our ferry trip to the museums on Bygdøy

This large sailboat is docked at the maritime museum, and is still used to train people how to sail.

The ornate bowsprit from the sailboat shown above.
