This article is not an endorsement for using any mobile device to interact with college email while driving and even if the college has no policy regarding this matter common sense ditates that it constitutes distracted driving. If you must use a mobile device and you're driving, you should stop your car in a safe manner and location while using it.

Over the past 20 years deaths caused by drunk drivers have plummeted, but overall traffic fatalities have increased. Why? See more at negligentdriving.com

"It's sad, when you think about it, but we've become such slaves to our cell phones that we often act in ways that are rude, thoughtless and unsafe. Somewhere along the way, it became commonly accepted that cell phone calls take precedence over everything else: safe driving, job responsibilities and other people's comfort. Legislators and courts have had to step in, making laws to regulate what should be common sense and courtesy." -- Jennifer King - Lawyers.com

GroupWise Access for Mobile Devices - Apple, Android, BlackBerry and others?

Cartoon! - iPhone .vs. Android .vs. BlackBerry - This is how smartphone users see each other.

Overview of Connectivity Options

There are a few different ways to connect with GroupWise, some are preferred over others, you may be limited by what your device supports and as always YMMV.

Device Specific Information for WebAccess and IMAP

Using the iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad with GroupWise WebAccess at Casper College

WebAccess through the "Basic Interface" with Safari or apps from the App Store provide realtime access to your email and calendar, ie. no sync service is necessary because your email and calendar items are stored only on the server and no data is stored on your mobile device. Because of this, WebAccess is preferred over IMAP and because IMAP does not support access to your calendar and can be problematic in setup and use.

Apps: "GW Mail", "GW Calendar", and "GW Contacts" are affordable iOS apps that allows users to more easily access their GroupWise data through GroupWise WebAccess. These offer a few more features than you would get over simply bookmarking a link to WebAccess in Safari. Available from the iTunes store, these apps makes life a little easier by remembering username, password and optimizing the interface when appropriate to spare the user from pinching and stretching the screens presented.
Other GroupWise-related apps may be available as well in the iTunes App Store.

Safari: Using the Safari web browser, type in https://gw.caspercollege.edu/gw/webacc and WebAccess should present iPod/iPhone/iPad users with a specially devised "Basic Interface" allowing better content accessibility on small screens. To be sure the "Basic Interface" is the one your device will use there is a check box on the login window or use this URL https://gw.caspercollege.edu/gw/webacc?User.interface=simple to go directly to it.

What About Calendar and Contacts Synchronization?

RIM requires the use of their Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) to sync these items. The college has not purchased BES or the hardware to run it on. Some third-party hosted solutions are out there if you search for them, but there is a cost involved.
In some cases users are claiming success using IMAP for email, then using the Blackberry Desktop Manager Software desktop synchronization software provided with the BlackBerry for calendar and contact sync. Apparently the phone is connected using a provided USB cable and syncs through the GroupWise client installed on your computer. No support is provided for this.
