This article is not an endorsement for using any mobile device to interact with
college email while driving and even if the college has no policy regarding this
matter common sense ditates that it constitutes distracted driving. If you must
use a mobile device and you're driving, you should stop your car in a safe manner and
location while using it.
Over the past 20 years deaths caused by drunk drivers have plummeted, but overall traffic fatalities have increased. Why?

"It's sad, when you think about it, but
we've become such slaves to our cell phones that we often act in ways that are rude,
thoughtless and unsafe. Somewhere along the way, it became commonly accepted that
cell phone calls take precedence over everything else: safe driving, job
responsibilities and other people's comfort. Legislators and courts have had to
step in, making laws to regulate what should be common sense and courtesy." --

GroupWise Access for Mobile Devices - Apple, Android, BlackBerry and others?
Cartoon! - iPhone .vs. Android .vs. BlackBerry - This is how smartphone users see each other.
Overview of Connectivity Options
There are a few different ways to connect with GroupWise,
some are
preferred over
others,
you may be limited by what your device supports and as always
YMMV.
-
GroupWise Sync Service for Mobile Devices (Novell Data Synchronizer) -
This service facilitates synchronization of GroupWise email, calendar and contacts with
the native email, calendar and contacts apps on many popular mobile devices
with operating system such as Android, Apple, Maemo, Palm, Symbian, and Windows Mobile.
This service should work with devices that support
the ActiveSync protocol. For device-specific information, see the
Novell Data Synchronizer Mobility Connector Wiki. See the
Novell Data Synchronizer Connector for Mobility Quick Start
to help you understand what to expect when GroupWise data is synchronized with your mobile device.
If you would like to use this service please contact the Help Desk and request to have the
mobile sync service enabled for you. Once enabled, connection instructions will be emailed.
-
GroupWise Mobile Server - Obsolete,
replaced by the GroupWise Sync Service for Mobile Devices (see above),
no longer supported, to be retired 6/2011
-
GroupWise WebAccess - WebAccess
allows secure, real-time (no sync required) access to your mailbox and
calendar through your devices' web browser. The web browsers with mobile devices vary greatly in
their usability but in most cases WebAccess will present users with
a specially devised "Basic Interface" allowing better content accessibility on small
screens.
-
IMAP - This protocol offers access to your GroupWise email-only.
IMAP is currently the only option BlackBerry users have to access their GroupWise email.
Users with any device supporting IMAP that don't need access to calendar and contacts may be satisfied with this option.
Configuration of some mobile device can sometimes be problematic. Some Android devices are prone to issues
related to (literally) thousands of duplicated messages.
-
Apps - Third-party Apps for iOS and Android devices
are available in the app stores that interface with GroupWise through IMAP or WebAccess. These generally work
well offering alternative views of your data and may be used to augment the native apps. See more below.
-
Desktop Synchronization - Many PDA device manufacturers provide desktop
synchronization software that uses a cradle or USB cable to synchronize email,
calendar, contacts, and tasks. This Personal Information Management (PIM) capability
has been around for years but produces mixed results as compatibility with GroupWise
and periodic desktop related issues present some challenges with support. This
method can be used for both wired and wireless devices. In some cases users are
claiming success using IMAP for email and desktop synchronization software provided
with the device for calendar and contact sync. A third-party product such as
CompanionLink
may work for you as well. "CompanionLink will keep your GroupWise data synchronized with
your phone". There are probably others...
-
Hosted Services - such as NotifyLink,
GroupWiseSync or
CompanionLink
offer services to "Synchronize GroupWise with your mobile phone or PDA" and there may be others...

What About Calendar and Contacts Synchronization?
RIM requires the use of their Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) to sync these items. The college
has not purchased BES or the hardware to run it on. Some third-party hosted solutions are
out there if you search for them, but there is a cost involved.
In some cases users are claiming success using IMAP for email, then using the Blackberry
Desktop Manager Software desktop synchronization software provided with the BlackBerry
for calendar and contact sync. Apparently the phone is connected using a provided USB cable
and syncs through the GroupWise client installed on your computer. No support is provided
for this.
