General objectives: The general objective of this course is to help students understand how the components of music combine to create styles and genres which are significant to disparate groups of people throughout the world.

Specific objectives: (Outcomes) To introduce students to the elements of music; to increase students’ awareness of the interaction of music with social, cultural, and historical settings; to aid students in developing their listening skills.

Evaluation criteria: Scores earned in the completion of six papers and two exams (midterm and final) will comprise the semester grade. A paper will be due every two weeks, following the completion of two chapters/video segments. Each paper will be worth 100 points. There will be two exams: a midterm and a final. Each exam (essays of three - five pages), based on a student’s experience attending a live concert performance during the semester, each of which will be worth 200 points. Final Grade: 1000-900 pts. = A; 800 -899 pts. = B; 700-799 pts. = C; 600-699 pts. = D; 0-599 pts. = F.

Copies of the videos will be available on reserve in the Goodstein Library on the campus of Casper College, or by leasing a set from RMI Media Productions, 1-800-745-5480 (http://www.rmimedia.com/).

A paper will be due every two weeks addressing the knowledge gained from two chapters (video, text, and related CD tracks). This paper will be an essay based on a question provided, or answers to a series of short questions provided. The papers will be due after the final airing of the segments involved. They must either be postmarked by, or delivered to the Music Office (Aley Fine Arts 303) or the instructor’s office (FA 307) by the following Tuesday. Early submissions are accepted and encouraged.

Midterm and Final Exams will be student reports on live concerts attended during the current semester. Students will use the understanding acquired through the course to compose these reports. Along with a description of the music itself, students may include information on the concert experience itself, background research on the works or composers relevant to their concert experience, information from the musicians or conductors that enhance, clarify, or change their view of the concert, etc.
